On Thursday, August 20, Latvian Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma held a meeting with the U.S. Congress Senators John McCain, Sheldon Whitehouse and John Barrasso, reports BC press secretary to the Prime Minister Aiva Rozenberga.

Replying to concerns expressed by Senator John McCain that Latvia still did not allocate adequate funding for defence, the Prime Minister of Latvia Laimdota Straujuma informed the US Senators that Latvia planned to increase its defence expenditure up to 2 percent of GDP by 2018. “Currently, the Latvian government discusses the state budget for 2016 and we are keeping that goal in mind. We are very confident about this budgetary priority,” said Laimdota Straujuma.

5.-6.augustā Latviju apmeklēja  ASV Bruņoto spēku gatavības apakškomitejas (pārrauga Pentagona uzdevumu īstenošanu, militāro darbību veikšanu, ASV Aizsardzības departamentu aģentūras, to budžetu un politiku) priekšsēdētājs Rob Wittman, Bruņoto spēku gatavības apakškomitejas pārstāve Madeleine Bordallo un Kongresa pārstāvji Bill Flores,  Robert Pittenger un Kenny Marchant.

[..]  Sarunas laikā ar aizsardzības ministru R.Bergmani  ASV kongresmeņi norādīja, ka Latvija ir atbildīga par sava aizsardzības budžeta palielināšanu un atzīmēja, ka palielināt to ir īpaši nozīmīgi šā brīža drošības izaicinājumu apstākļos.[..]

The distinguished visitors were able to meet with Latvian Land Forces Commander, Col. Martins Liberts, and witness the “Team of Attack” competition, conducted by the Attack Company of 1st Battalion(Airborne), 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade and Latvian Soldiers. The visitors were briefed on the Soldiers’ support of Operation Atlantic Resolve,an ongoing multinational partnership focused on joint training and security cooperation between the U.S. and other NATO allies.
